"War Retold: Photographs from Vietnam"
A/P/A Studies is proud to present a photography exhibition on Vietnam, as seen through the eyes and camera of Serene Ford Northington, NYU Tisch School of the Arts alumna. With this series of 20 vibrant photographs, Northington beautifully juxtaposes seemingly unrelated details and fragments of contemporary Vietnam against quiet images of her mother as she reflects upon and reconnects with the country she left three decades ago. The images are an attempt to reconcile the remnants of war left behind in Vietnam and the collective consciousness of its people.

Gallery Artist Talk: Serene Ford Northington
  • Tuesday, February 25th / 6pm to 8pm
  • A/P/A Studies Gallery, NYU

How do we look at a war once it is over? How can the people left behind discuss it? Northington explores such difficult issues using the evocative images in her exhibition, "War Retold: Photographs from Vietnam," personal stories of journeys, her mother's and family's old pictures from the homeland, and her relationship to these photographs. She will also share images from her bodies of work from Africa, Israel, New York and others that incorporate themes of identity with the nature of storytelling.
