South Asian Youth in Creative Expression
A/P/A Studies Program & Institute is proud to sponsor a special educational project in collaboration with South Asian Youth Action (SAYA!) and the IndoCenter of Art & Culture. Siddhartha Joag, as part of his on-going commitment to public art as a means of education and free expression, will work with students from SAYA!, producing a mural on the walls of the IndoCenter. The mural will be conceptualized and executed by SAYA! youth, under JoagÕs direction, expanding on themes explored in his current exhibition, Please Do Not Throw Peanuts at My God. The mural will be on view at the IndoCenter from February 19-27, 2002, as well as on the A/P/A website. For more information about the IndoCenter and its programs, please visit their website at www.indocenter.org. South Asian Youth Action (SAYA!) is a nonprofit, community-based organization dedicated to empowering South Asian youth. Based in Queens, NY, SAYA! offers programs at its drop-in center in Elmhurst, and at five public high schools in Queens and Manhattan. SAYA!'s mission is to promote self-esteem, provide opportunities for growth and development, and build cultural, social and political awareness among young people of South Asian background. SAYA! was founded in 1996 in response to the concern about the lack of support services for South Asian youth. A grass-roots campaign fueled by youth involvement created a youth center which has become a vital community resource. For more information about SAYA!, please visit their website at www.saya.org. |
