CHUN KONG CHOW'S MEMOS OF HIS TRAVEL
(from his memos/notes, found February 2002)
At the time of the First World War (1916) I had the dread experience of a German submarine attack.
I went from Hong Kong to the American Consulate in Canton to apply for a passport to Melborne (Australia) to take care of my father's business.
The ship enroute from Sydney to Melborne was fired upon by German submarine, fortunately was not damaged, the ship following was blown up.
Conducted mercantile business in Australia till 1926; then with the family, sailed from Sydney, Australia on the SS Makura, on October 1st 1926 to San Francisco.
I enter United States with a merchants passport (Section Six Merchant) and also with a letter of introduction from the Vice Consulate of the American Consulate in Melborne. There were no difficulties clearing immigration; in addition we were given dinner.
note: Immigration processing was at Angel Island, due too late processing, completed after last ferry, we stayed one night.
