In 1992, Wing Fong Chin retired from her position as Local 23-25 Executive Board Chair. The ILGWU recognized her many years of dedicated service at its 1992 National Convention. As she stood on the convention stage, Wing Fong Chin, affectionately referred to as "Sister Fong" by other ILGWU officials, received a standing ovation and an ocean of flowers and awards from union members and officials.
Three years later, declining union member rolls forced the ILGWU and Amalgamated Union to consolidate to form UNITE. Chin retired from garment shop work in 1997. Since her retirement, she has continued to work four days per week for UNITE, aiding sweatshop workers in Chinatown. The day after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Wing Fong Chin was at work in UNITE's Chinatown office.
"[Wing Fong Chin] feels fortunate that she is now retired, but remains sympathetic towards young immigrants who, like herself forty years ago, must work in the sweatshops in order to keep their families fed. In her eyes, the struggle is an uphill one, but one that nevertheless must continue."
